Heat therapy or thermotherapy can be used for many different reasons. It can help sooth aches and pains by reducing muscle stiffness and discomfort. There are actually two kinds of heat therapy: moist and dry. The two are both beneficial and dry heat therapy may be easier to apply, but using moist heat therapy can provide better pain relief.
Moist heat therapy can be can be applied by either taking a hot bath, or using a steamed towel or moist heat pack. Using moist heat therapy is more effective than dry heat in the healing of deep tissues. It can penetrate further than just the surface area as compared to dry heat therapy. It is also fast acting. Patients being treated with moist heat therapy can quickly feel the heat treatment and feel pain relief throughout the body.
Patients usually respond better to moist heat therapy rather than dry heat therapy and it has been reported that moist heat therapy provides relief to a greater number of symptoms. Moist heat can be used to heal many different conditions such as pain, stiffness, and deep muscle spasms.
We recommend using the Relief Pak® HotSpot® Moist Heat Pack to help soothe and heal your injuries. This moist heat pack works by providing moist heat to soothe discomfort. The pack can be heated on the stove in water, in a microwave or a heating unit.
Moist heat packs are reusable and should be stored in a plastic bag in the freezer after use. A heating unit can be used to effectively heat moist heat packs up to 170°F in an insulated hot water bath in order to perform moist heat therapy. We suggest using the Relief Pak® Heating Unit which comes in a variety of sizes, ideal for clinics small and large.
Most doctors advise to not use heat therapy directly after an injury because it has the opposite effect of ice. Limit heat therapy to short time intervals at first and be sure to use a heat pack cover between the skin and the heating product to avoid injury. As always, consult with your doctor before using heat therapy, both dry and moist.
