Do you have lower back pain? According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), at least 80 percent of Americans will experience lower back pain in their lifetime. This makes it one of the most common causes for doctor visits. Lower back pain can occur for multiple different reasons and can have several different treatment options. Thankfully, most lower back issues can be treated either at home or medically depending on the severity.
Lower back pain commonly occurs as a result of a physical activity. For example, not bending your knees to support your back when lifting heavy objects can result in muscle sprains or strains in the back. Sudden movements like getting out of bed or a chair can also result in lower back pain. One preventative measure you can take to prevent lower back pain is taking caution when lifting heavy items. Lifting with proper form is a good way to prevent potential back injuries. Additionally, maintaining good posture as well as diet and exercise can stop lower back pain from occurring.
Most back pain issues can be treated by either yourself or a health care professional. When the pain in your back is mild and you are not in severe pain, try resting and putting ice on it. Sometimes lying on your back can be uncomfortable, if that occurs, try lying on your side or stomach. You can place a cold rag or ice pack on the part of your back that hurts to stop the swelling and reduce pain. If you have been resting your back for 72 hours or more and you are still experiencing pain, please consult your doctor. Your doctor will diagnose the problem and recommend a proper plan of care that may include medication, physical therapy, or in severe cases surgery.
Lower back pain can be difficult at times but just know that you are not alone. A lot of people get lower back pain and it is treatable with either rest, medication, or physical therapy. If you experience chronic lower back pain, please see your doctor immediately.
