People who are not able to get a least 6 hours of sleep each night tend to get serious health problems as they grow older.

One health problem associated with a lack of sleep is weight gain. New research has shown that healthy men in their 20s, who only got 5 hours of sleep per night, start to gain more weight. This is because the body metabolizes a lot of fat when people sleep. Not getting enough sleep slows down the amount of fat metabolized, leading to weight gain.

Sleep deprivation does not just affect weight gain. A lack of sleep over a long period of time has been shown to cause several serious health conditions including hypertension, diabetes, and a suppressed immune system. It is also worth noting that the amount of people who aren’t getting a healthy amount of sleep each night continues to rise. This means more and more people are at risk of acquiring serious health issues as they grow older.

To combat lack of sleep and prevent future health issues, it is important to recognize the signs of why you are not getting enough sleep. One common reason you might not be able to sleep at night is too much screen time. Whether it is the TV or your smart phone, looking at a screen before you sleep can impact your sleep pattern. This is because these screens emit a blue light which can make it harder for you to turn your brain off at night. To ease your body into sleep, try to stop looking at any screen at least an hour before you go to bed.
