Studies have found that overeating over the holiday season and not working it off afterwards can explain why people start to gain weight as they age. Luckily you can avoid these unhealthy tendencies during and after the holiday season. Below we’ve outlined some tips to help you have a healthy holiday season.

One helpful tip to have a healthy holiday is to avoid sitting down for long periods of time. It can be tempting to sit on the couch all day by your fireplace where it is nice and cozy but sitting for long periods of time can be unhealthy. Instead, try going for a quick walk or get up and stand to talk to family and friends.

Another helpful tip is to be conscious of what you eat. Overeating might be one of the biggest problems that can lead to weight gain. Your holiday dinner may be very tempting and it could be hard to resist eating everything on the table. We recommend you eat the regular portion that you normally eat and digesting it for about 20 minutes. If you feel full, don’t force yourself to eat more than you can. If you do end up wanting more food, try indulging more in healthier foods such as fruits and vegetable rather than unhealthy foods such as chocolates and sweets.

It is important to take action to try and have a healthy holiday season, even when it can be tempting and difficult. If you do end up indulging in a lot of food and sitting more it is not the end of the world. You will just have to work it off harder later and find the motivation to burn off those holiday calories.
