With the holiday season ending and the new year fast approaching, it is important to set your goals on what you want to accomplish for next year. Since the pandemic, having and maintaining a healthier lifestyle has never been more important. Living a healthier lifestyle means getting sick less and not having as many health complications in the future. There are some healthy habits to keep in mind when preparing for a healthier new year.
The first goal you may want to set for a healthy new year is to exercise regularly. Staying physically fit can lead to a whole host of benefits. It can improve both your cardiovascular and muscular health. It can also help fight disease and improve your overall mood. The American Heart Association recommends a minimum of at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. Which means taking at least 30 minutes out of your day to go for a walk or lift weights. Don’t be afraid to exercise in the cold either. During the winter months, exercising outdoors offers benefits such as vitamin D.
In addition to exercising, it is also important to eat right. Your body won’t get the full benefits of exercising if you are eating junk food. This is because your body needs nutrients and fuel in order to get the energy it needs to stay physically fit. Eating protein as well as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will help you stay alert and focused. You should also try to avoid eating a lot of red meat. Doing this will help decrease your blood cholesterol levels. Which decreases your risk of chronic diseases, including the top killers which are heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and obesity.
Lastly, you want to get enough sleep every night. Not getting enough sleep at night can cause a lot of health problems for you down the road. Disorders such as insomnia can ruin your quality of sleep. Which causes you to be constantly tired and low energy throughout the day. It is ideal to get about 8 hours of sleep a day. Doing this will allow you to feel rejuvenated and ready to take on the day each morning. Just be sure to set a time each night you want to go to bed and avoid things like caffeine, alcohol and electronics before bed. As the light emitting from your phone can keep you up and cause a more restless sleep.
Whether you are looking to get into better shape, eat better or sleep longer, it is important to stick to that plan. Often times people set goals only to give up on them in a few weeks into the new year. So, make sure to create incentives or have friends and family help you with your goals.
