As people age, Osteoporosis becomes more and more common among men and women. Instead of succumbing to the crippling effects of this disease, there are actions you can do to prevent it. Exercise is a great way to help prevent this disease from hindering your life. For preventing osteoporosis, there are two types of exercises which are important for building and maintaining bone density: weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening.
Weight-bearing Exercises
Weight-bearing exercises are great activities which involve you moving against gravity while staying upright. It can be practiced as a high-impact or low-impact exercise. High-impact exercises help you build strong bones fast. Examples of a high-impact exercises are burpees, running, jumping jacks, or jumping rope. For a safer alternative, you may want to try a low-impact activity. This type of activity relies more on cardio machines, such as the elliptical or treadmill, and other low impact aerobics such as going for a walk. Low-impact exercises reduce the risk of hurting yourself and are better for those who already have osteoporosis.
Muscle-Strengthening Exercises
Muscle-strengthening exercises involve moving your body, a weight, or some other resistance against gravity. These resistance-based exercises include lifting weights or using elastic exercise bands. Thankfully CanDo® has you covered for either activity, with CanDo® Dumbbells and the CanDo® MGE™ exerciser.
