No matter who you are, as human beings we all need sleep. Sleep is needed every day for people to function the following day. Without sleep, you won’t be able to perform at your best, so it is important to raise awareness for those who don’t get enough sleep. Starting this Saturday, from March 8th to the 14th the National Sleep Foundation hosts its annual National Sleep Awareness Week.
National Sleep Awareness Week is an annual event which celebrates sleep and wellbeing. It campaigns to encourage the public to prioritize sleep to improve their overall health. It is recommended that most healthy adults receive between 7 to 9 hours of sleep per day, while children and teens require even more. Getting the optimal amount of sleep everyday will put you at your best for the next day to come. To help manage your sleeping schedule, you can use the National Sleep Foundation’s Bedtime Calculator. This tool lets you enter in how many hours of sleep you want to get and based off that number it tells you what time you should go to bed or plan to wake up.
Despite how important sleeping is, not everyone sleeps well. There are people with insomnia who really can’t find a good night’s sleep. Not getting a good night’s sleep can lead to you being sluggish the next morning. Also, lack of sleep could result in poor daily activity performance and can decrease your general health. Raising awareness about the importance of sleep can help fight insomnia, giving people with this condition the resources they need to help combat a restless sleep.
Sleeping is the best thing you can do to help promote a healthy lifestyle. If you feel like you are not getting enough sleep, please consult your doctor.
